Things I Learn in Textiles
- The second most stretchy fiber, nylon, can stretch up to 23x its original length. The most stretchy fiber, spandex can stretch up to 700x its original length.
- Bamboo fiber is not green or ecological or natural at all. It just sounds nice.
- Most manufactured fibers are made from petroleum, so clothing prices rise with oil prices.
- If you want to go green and purchase earth-friendly clothing, do not buy cotton. DO NOT BUY COTTON. You know all those chemicals the farming industry uses in pesticides and fertilizers and such? Over half of the amount used worldwide is used solely by the cotton industry. Not to mention cotton farming also uses up a lot of our water supply and nearly destroys the soil. Cotton is just bad news bears.
I don’t know why this is all so interesting to me but it really is. Geez!
(In my next lab I get to burn fabric hehehehehehe.)
